1 Wallace, Graham
RAF Biggin Hill
Paperback
1969, Tandem, illustrated
Condition: very good
This is the story of the most famous fighter airfield in the world. Founded in 1917 as a wireless research establishment, Biggin Hill, guarding the southern approaches to London, soon became a key defence station, particularly during the Battle of Britain. On the night of Whit-Sunday, 1918, two pilots of 141 Squadron made Biggin Hill's first kill - a German Gotha - and during the Second World War over 1,600 enemy aircraft were shot down by Hurricanes and Spitfires operating from it. The reputation of Biggin Hill during World War II is world-famous. Among the famous aces who flew from Biggin on the Bump are Michael Crossley, Sailor Malan, Mungo Park, A. C. Deere, Max Aitken, Brian Kingcome - as well as the Free French and U.S. Eagle squadrons. The story has been told, not only from official records, but from diaries, memories and interviews with the men and women who served there.
