At the age of seventeen, David Maskell joined the Royal Navy to serve as Midshipman on the battleship H.M.S. Imperator, on active duty in the North Sea. It was the start of a turbulent and adventurous career. In the inter-war years, he was to join the Fleet Air Arm, and rose to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander. Waging a constant war against authority, fighting personal setbacks and an Admiralty Court Martial, his chance to take part in an heroic action came with World War II. Transferred to The Royal Naval Air Research Department, he found himself on a suicidal mission against the German battleship Von Spiegal, mighty warship of the German fleet.
