It begins with the Navy's hunt for the raiding German pocket-battleship Admiral Graf Spee, gives a vivid picture of the great victory which was won in the Battle of the River Plate, and concludes with an exciting account of the rescue, by night in the ice of a Norwegian fjord, of 300 prisoners who had been held for months in the holds of the notorious Altmark, the Graf Spee's supply vessel. Time and again the Altmark had eluded her pursuers in a chase from the South Atlantic to Norwegian territorial waters Then, at last, British Naval Intelligence located her. Too late the Altmark fled into the nearest fjord, relying for protection on Norwegian neutrality. There followed the gripping climax: the Cossack's entry into the fjord, the Altmark's attempt to ram her, the successful boarding by a party with bayonets fixed, the opening of the hatches, and the clear English voice ringing out: "Any Englishmen down there?"
