Hermann Buhl was one of the greatest and toughest solo climbers of all time. Driven on by his enormous determination, he attempted and achieved climbs of such notorious difficulty that he became a legend. The greatest of these was the conquering of Nanga Parbat - an impressive 27,000 feet of sheer rock and ice with a disastrous history of fatalities - when Hermann Buhl ascended the final 3,000 feet on his own and spent the night wedged into a rock crack.
