Schechtman, Joseph B. The Mufti and the Fuehrer: The Story of the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and His Unholy Alliance With Nazism Hardcover 1965, Thomas Yoseloff Condition: slightly rounded corner of bottom back cover, otherwise book and dust jacket are in very good condition Haj Amin el-Husseini was perhaps the most spectacular political figure in the Middle East during the years between the First and Second World Wars. An ardent Arab nationalist fiercely opposed to the creation of a Jewish state in Palestine, he was charged with having instigated anti-Jewish riots in Jerusalem in 1920, and was forced to flee to avoid punishment. The British, indifferent to his anti-Jewish leanings as long as they believed he was not challenging the British rule in Palestine, allowed him to return under an amnesty in 1921 and engineered his appointment as Mufti of Jerusalem. In 1937, when in addition to provoking anti-Jewish riots the Mufti became a menace to the British mandatory regime, he escaped to Lebanon, and later to Baghdad, where he was the gray eminence behind the abortive Iraqi pro-Axis coup of 1941 and conducted high-level negotiations with Axis leaders. With the collapse of the Iraqi rebellion, he managed to escape to Teheran and from there to Rome and Berlin, openly and actively joining the Axis camp. From October 1941 until May 1945, he built up a world-wide network of anti-Allied activities, including propaganda broadcasts, espionage and the recruiting of Arab and Moslem military units for Nazi Germany. With the collapse of Germany, Haj Amin became one of the many fugitive Nazi collaborators liable to stand trial by the victorious Allies. Yet no Allied power claimed him. After eight months spent comfortably in French protective custody, he once again fled, from Paris to Cairo, where King Farouk gave him asylum. Since then Haj Amin has been, in one way or another, in the forefront of most major political events in the Arab and Moslem world. Price:
